Phonics and Reading

Early reading is started within our Nursery. Here the children are exposed to an expansive range of stories, poems, songs and texts. When children are ready we start to introduce them to set 1 sounds from our Read, Write Inc Scheme. Here the children will learn to recognise the sounds and the picture cards attached and learn how to talk like Fred the frog. This is continued into our Reception and Keystage 1 classes where children build upon their sound knowledge and use how to use this to help them to decode and comprehend.

At Lyngford Park Primary School we believe in the imporance of early reading, therefore children are assessed on a regular basis and moved groups according to their ability. For some time they may even recieve some 1:1 support to help them on their reading journey.

Each week the whole school takes part in the reading challenge. Children are expected to read at least 5 times a week at home to support them with their love of reading.
